It’s not made for people who like to install hundreds of applications. This solution feels more consistent and better thought out than Google’s approach, but it also has disadvantages. Swipe your finger to the left, and you’ll find an alphabetical list of all of your installed applications. It contains a small list of apps you’ve pinned there. There’s the Start Screen with the «Live Tiles». Or you can switch to the Launcher, an alphabetical list of all of your apps. They contain widgets, and a subset of your applications. On Android, you can either use the five spatial Home Screens. Like Android, WP7 has two different ways of accessing apps. Not having to rely on iTunes for syncing is really, really nice. Of course, Windows Phone 7 Connector only offers a fraction of the features of its Windows counterpart, 1 but it offers everything you really need.Īt first, it would seem as if the lack of iTunes support for WP7 would be a disadvantage. It also looks a lot cleaner, because it only does one thing: synchronize WP7 phones.

The Windows Phone 7 Connector app launches a hell of a lot faster than iTunes. Adding more applications may make the situation worse, rather than better, especially for new users.īut if you’re using a WP7 phone, you’re in luck: you don’t have to wait for iTunes to launch just to synchronize your phone.

So why do books need to be stored in iTunes?Īnd since the synchronization part of iTunes already synchronizes things that aren’t part of iTunes, why not put it into its own application, the way it used to be in earlier versions of Mac OS X?Īt any rate, none of this is easy. Contacts aren’t stored in iTunes, they’re stored in Address Book. Pictures aren’t stored in iTunes, they’re stored in iPhoto. Apple could at least remove books and phone synchronization from the app. It’s true that breaking up iTunes is not an easy task, but as it currently exists, iTunes is a mess. What would you remove? If you put, say, the iTunes Store into its own application, wouldn’t that make using the whole thing even more complicated, because now people would have to jump between two different applications to buy songs? I realize that it is hard for Apple to break up iTunes. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at Windows Phone 7. So this essay won’t have many screenshots. If you want people to talk about your platform, the first thing you do is to give them the opportunity to actually do so. Sites like First & 20 could not exist for WP7.ĭear Microsoft. One of the reasons for this discrepancy is that WP7 offers no way to take a screenshot. Microsoft’s phone platform is practically invisible, despite selling reasonably well, and having high customer satisfaction numbers. Looks like some of the codecs are not supported in the RC but should be in the final version.ĭumb question: why is Microsoft undermining the work of a developer with a working paid application that does exactly this? Shouldn't they have focused on bringing new capabilities to WHS2011 instead of reinventing WHSPhone and destroying the developer's value prop? Just saying. If you take a look around the Internet, you’ll be forgiven to think that nobody actually owns a WP7 phone. I was hoping to get away without having to transcode any more videos!!

It's interesting that with WHS 2011 remote web access, you can natively stream recorded tv files using silverlight but with this remote app on windows phone you'll still need to transcode if you want to access them thru windows phone.

Not sure if it's trying to stream or download the DVR-MS file but I stopped waiting after about 5 minutes. For DVR-MS, I don't get the error but there's only a blank screen - it doesn't play. I get an error "The Media File is not supported" when trying to play wtv files.
